To help make your decision a bit easier, we’ve selected some of our favorite models to review. Below you’ll find what our editors like and dislike about each model.
ZeroWater 10 Cup Pitcher Review
If you live in an area with really hard water (like Las Vegas), then you’ll want to check out this ZeroWater pitcher. Hands down, we think that this is the water pitcher with the best purifier on the market right now. Living in Las Vegas, I’ve tested out Brita, Pur and Zero Water pitchers and find that this is the best water filter pitcher for hard water with a lot of minerals.
However, the filters for this one are a bit expensive compared to other brands. And if you live in a place like Vegas where the water has a lot of minerals, then these filters don’t last all that long since they get clogged up with all the contaminants that they’re catching for you.
Best thing about it: seems to catch more contaminants than other brands
Worst thing about it: overall cost to own is a bit more expensive if you have really hard water
Brita 5 Cup Metro Water Pitcher Review
The Brita brand in the first that I tried when I wanted to have filtered water for my coffee. What I like about this particular model is that it is slim enough to fit in the door of my refrigerator, while still making enough water for a family of two.
I also really like that this particular model is available in a variety of colors, and the filters are relatively cheap to replace and last a reasonable amount of time. In fact, I think it is probably the best cheap water filter pitcher for the money if the size and contaminants filtered meet your needs.
I do wish that Brita filters removed more contaminants, and that it didn’t take so long for the water to fill the pitcher. Overall, this is a good, affordable option if you don’t have really hard water with a lot of contaminants. I don’t recommend using one of these in a place like Vegas cause it won’t get out all of the contaminants. However, I regularly use one at my parents house in Tennessee with no complaints.
Best thing about it: fits easily in refrigerator door and filters are affordable
Worst thing about it: doesn’t filter out enough contaminants when water is really hard with a lot of minerals.
What To Consider Before Buying
To help you make the best decision on which pitcher is the best choice for your home or office water filtration needs, we’ve tried to compile the top questions that you need to ask yourself. Below, you’ll see our tips on things to consider before adding one of these to your fridge.
What sort of a budget do I need to have to pick up a water filter pitcher?
One of the best things about water filter pitchers is that you can get them for a pretty reasonable price tag. These little units do a lot in keeping your water safe and healthy to drink, but they aren’t going to cost you a fortune, unlike a full water filtration system. One thing that you may want to keep in mind when deciding on a budget for a unit is the price of replacement filters. The higher the price for replacement filters, the more the unit is going to cost in the long run. Generally, water filter pitchers are made out of a plastic design, which means that they are pretty unlikely to break on you. You may definitely want to check out the price of filters before you purchase a unit if you want to be wallet friendly.
How much water should I expect that the pitcher is able to filter?
The amount of water that a unit is capable of filtering varies from product to product. Generally, you should expect that a filter is able to last through 100 plus liters of water. The more the water filter pitcher is capable of filtering, the less often you are going to have to buy a filter for the unit, which saves you money over time. It is important to remember, however, that just because a unit can filter more water than another unit it doesn’t mean that the water filter pitcher is better. The best way to tell if it is better is to take into account how long it lasts and also look at what the filtration system removes in terms of contaminants. The more contaminants removed from the water, the healthier the water will be.
What chemicals should the water filter remove from the water?
The most common water filter pitchers on the market should be able to remove some of the commonplace chemicals/ materials found in water. A common and relatively low priced unit should be able to remove things like chlorine, zinc, copper, mercury and even something like cadmium from your water. If you pay a higher price tag for a water filter pitcher you can expect that the filter is able to remove things like fluoride and even lead. One other thing you may want to consider when picking up your filter is what the filter leaves in your water. Water has calcium and magnesium, which is healthy for us in the small trace amounts that are in the water. It never hurts to take a look to see what good things a water filter pitcher leaves behind, in order to get the most benefit from one of these products.
What do I look for in terms of the actual pitcher design?
The first thing that you should look for in a quality design is something that is easy to pour and that has a lid that is easily removable. Look for a unit with a proper spout on it so that you can have a nice and steady pour and not have to worry about missing your cup. In addition, you may also want to check out the handle on the water filter pitcher to see how comfortable and easy it is to hold onto. The best pitchers on the market will have an open handle design rather than a closed one so that you can get a full grip on the pitcher and easily transfer the liquid out of the pitcher and into your cup.
What else should I look for in a good quality product?
You should definitely make sure that the water filter pitcher you are buying is BPA free and FDA approved. Beyond that, you may also want to try and find something that is recyclable so that your pitcher is as environmentally friendly as possible. Not all units are fully recyclable as different manufacturers will use different types of materials in their filtering methods than others. Depending on the number of people that live in your household, you may also want to look for a pitcher that has some kind of a cover for the spout on the unit as this will keep the water in better condition over time.
What is a filter indicator and is that something that I should look for in a pitcher?
The best water filter pitchers on the market will allow you to be able to tell when the filter in the pitcher needs to be replaced. Different units will have different ways of showing the user that the filter is ready to be replaced based on the price that you are willing to pay for a unit. Normally there is a light on the top of the unit that counts the number of times that the unit has been opened and refilled so that the filter can be changed after the right number of refills. However, you may find that different units on the market have different ways of showing when a filter needs to be replaced and this is definitely an aspect of a water filter pitcher that you should check out.
Is the size of the water filter pitcher something that I should take into account?
Different water filter pitchers are capable of being able to hold different amounts of water. The more water that a unit is capable of holding, the less you are going to have to refill the pitcher. The more people that are in your family/ household, the larger the pitcher you may want to purchase. It never hurts to look at the amount of water that the unit is capable of carrying as this can give you a good idea of how much room the unit will take up in your fridge as well as how often you are going to have to fill up the pitcher. One good reason why you may want to consider picking up a smaller pitcher is if you have smaller kids around the house and want them to be able to pour their own water. A larger pitcher will definitely add to the weight of the unit and it may be too heavy for a small child if the pitcher is full.
What kind of a warranty should I expect to be able to find?
The nice thing about water filter pitchers is that they are built to last. These units will generally not have any flimsy parts in their designs allowing you to be able to refill and reuse them on a regular basis. For this reason, you are going to find that this type of product has a long warranty on it. You should expect to be able to find a water filter pitcher that has a warranty that is at least a few years long all the way to a lifetime warranty. You may find that some of the more expensive water filter pitchers on the market have longer warranties on them, but it really varies so this is definitely something that you might want to watch out for.
Should I expect anything to come with the water filter pitcher?
One thing that you should expect to come with your water filter pitcher is at least one filter allowing you to be able to use the unit. Especially if you are planning on buying an expensive water filter pitcher, then this is definitely something that you will want to look for. The more replacement filters you have off of the start, the less you are going to have to pay for the unit over the long run. Filters certainly add up over time and the more you get off of the bat, the better the deal.
Is filtering speed important?
One thing that ranges widely from product to product is the filtering system and how long it takes for the water to become ready to use after being put into the pitcher. If you have a large family, you may want to try to find a unit that is capable of some fast filtering so that you aren’t waiting around for a drink. It can be hard to find the filtering speed of a pitcher and you may find that you have to look at customer reviews or deep in the specs of a unit to see the filtering speed. However, if you want convenience and the ability to be able to take a drink whenever you want, you may want to take the time to look for this information.
Is there a good way to tell if the unit is going to be something that lasts?
Beyond looking to see if the product is covered by a long warranty, you can also take a look at the thickness of the plastic of the water filter pitcher to see if it will hold the test of time. The thicker the plastic is on a pitcher, the longer the unit is likely going to last. If plastic is thicker it is going to be less likely to crack or break on impact and it will be able to withstand things like dishwashing and everyday use that much better. The lid is often the most fragile part of a water filter pitcher and this is definitely the area that you are going to want to pay the most attention to when checking to see quality. Expect a nice, thick lid that has an easy on/ off mechanism. Anything on a hinge is likely to snap off over time so just make sure that the unit is easy to refill as this will be the main reason you will be taking the lid off of a water filter pitcher.
Is accessibility an issue?
Especially if you are thinking about picking up a water filter pitcher from something that is an off name brand, you may want to think about accessibility and shipping times. It never hurts to take a look and see how long the water filter takes to ship to your house, especially if the unit is needed urgently. You are almost certainly going to come across pitchers on the market that take a while to ship to your house and this may definitely be an important factor for you depending on your circumstances. The other thing that you may want to check shipping times for before making your water filter pitcher purchase is the replacement filters. Depending on where these are made and how often you need to change out these filters this is another useful piece of information that you can gather before deciding which pitcher you want to pick up.
We hope this article has helped you be able to see just how nice a water filter pitcher can be. These units are fully capable of making your water cleaner and safer to drink. No matter if you live in a city or out in the country a water filter could do you some good. This is a great extra step to take to ensure that your water is free of contaminants and you can get a water filter pitcher for a pretty low price tag. We hope that you consider picking up one of these water filter pitchers and that you get the chance to enjoy some nice, refreshing water sometime soon.
