How to Choose the Best Heater for Your Basement?

The two most important features to consider when heating a basement include the wattage of the heater, and the recommended usage area. For example, if you buy a heater for your 1000 sq. ft. basement that is only recommended for 225 sq. ft., then the heater won’t make much of a dent in the temperature of your basement.

So what is wattage? Wattage is the output of energy measured from a heater. As a rule of thumb, a 1,500-watt heater will cover a room that is 150 sq. feet as a primary heat source. The higher the wattage, the more that each heater will heat—as a primary source.

So what does it cost? As a general rule, a heater that is 1500-watts is equal to 1.5 kilowatt hours on your electric bill. This means that for each hour one 1500-watt heater is running, it expends 1.5 kilowatt hours. This equals out to approximately 16 cents per hour of usage. For a 1500-watt heater that is running all day, every day, it would cost approximately $107.52 per month. However, many people don’t run the heat while they are not home, which significantly reduces the overall cost of running a heater, perhaps even down to a third of the price!

No matter which heater you choose, make sure that you and your family will be toasty warm this winter!
