6 Most Common Types of Kitchen Range Hoods to Consider

Your kitchen layout plays a significant role in which type of kitchen range hoods to use. There are lots of kitchen range hoods to choose from, but these six are the most common ones:

Chimney or ceiling-mount range hoods

Also known as island hoods, chimney hoods hang from the ceiling over a kitchen island with a cooktop. They’re vented through ducting in the ceiling and come in a variety of styles – from curved metal to glass canopies. Your island hood must be wider than your cooking surface because a chimney hood usually lacks cabinets or a wall alongside it to help funnel fumes.

Under-cabinet range hoods

Under-cabinet hoods come in different styles and they’re divided into ducted and non-ducted. They’re attached to the underside of the cabinet above the range, stealing the cabinet space. If you have a cabinet above your range, you will have to remove it for this type of kitchen hood to fit it and ensure it functions properly.

Wall-mount hoods

These hoods resemble under-cabinet range hoods, but they mount to the wall. This is an ideal option for those who don’t have cabinets. Wall-mount hoods are considered to be more contemporary than other types of hoods since almost every includes the LED display touch control.

Pro hoods

Designed for professional cookers, pro hoods aren’t easy to find. They come in different styles and can be ducted and non-ducted. They’re similar to under-cabinet hoods but are much larger and have more power and options than the typical under-cabinet models. If you cook very often and you don’t mind having a large-looking range hood, then a pro hood must be your choice.

Inserts

Also called power packs, inserts are the hidden hoods, which are built into the cabinet above your cooktop and provide classic venting. They’re often used in the small kitchens.

Downdraft hoods

Although they’re considered to be ineffective in preventing the odors and grease, if you don’t like the look of traditional and modern hoods, invest in a downdraft version. It’s hidden in the cooktop and pops up whenever you cook. It pulls the smoke and steam horizontally across the range.

The Most Important Range Hood Features to Look For

Before you invest in a range hood, be sure you check the following crucial features:

Power

First of all, the air flow in the hoods is measured in cubic feet per minute (CFM). The higher CFM, the higher the price. If you cook occasionally, there’s no need in buying a powerful hood. A kitchen hood with 300-350 CFM will be enough to prevent steam and strong cooking odors. If you cook a lot, look for a hood with at least 450 CFM.

Built-in temperature sensor

It may seem like this feature isn’t a must. But if you’re looking for an over-the-range microwave, it’s better to have a thermostat control, which will protect your microwave electronic from being damaged by very high temperatures. When the temperature below the kitchen hood becomes too high, a built-in temperature sensor automatically turns on the fan. It’s not recommended for range hoods, though.

Filters

Aluminum filters seems to be the best ones as you can wash and clean them in your dishwasher. Charcoal filters are effective as well, but you can’t wash them; you’ll need to change it every time it gets greasy and dirty.
Filter indicator lights. The indicator shows you when you should replace or wash the filters to ensure the hood works properly.

Fan speeds

Having a range hood that has 6 fan speeds doesn’t mean having the best ventilation. The hoods with 2 fan speeds are as effective as those with 3 and 5 fan speeds. Just check out if each speed ensures powerful and quiet ventilation.

Lighting

Available with fluorescent, incandescent, LED or halogen bulbs, hood lightning can be different. I recommend choosing LED lightning since they seem to be brighter. Look for 2 to 4 bulbs for maximum illumination.
Sound. The higher the CFM of the range hood, the higher its sound level. Consider this fact before making your final choice.

Buying a kitchen range hood isn’t rocket science, but it does require some consideration. It depends on how often you cook and what layout your kitchen has. If you still have trouble choosing the best range hood, talk to a professional and suggest your options before clicking the Buy Now button.
